How to impress on your first DJ gig

It always takes a little time to pick up the basics and adjust when you start any new career, hobby or learn a new skill. It is exactly the same when you start out as a DJ. Whether you perform at home or in a professional capacity, there are plenty of things you will need to learn, but the following tips and information should help you.

Preparation is the single most important thing you can do to ensure your DJ set will be a success. Make a checklist of everything you will need to take with you, from your DJ mixer and DJ decks to your headphones. Some brands, such as Pioneer CDJ 2000, have packages that come with their own bags, so there is no excuse for forgetting anything.

Another essential thing you must not forget to take with you is a USB penlight or another discrete source of light. Take this with you to each and every gig, as venues can often be incredibly dark. Without any light, you won't be able to see what you're doing.

To prevent embarrassing technical hitches during your set, and to show yourself as a true professional, you should visit the club, bar or venue before the gig itself. Check out where you will be setting up, set up all your equipment and carry out a quick sound check.

It is very important not to get distracted during the set itself, and the first way this can happen is through alcohol. Don't drink whilst you work, especially if you are a new DJ, as this can lead to mistakes, unprofessionalism and potentially career-ending consequences.

Friends can also distract you whilst you're trying to work, either requesting endless tracks or simply chatting to you. It can be difficult, but tell them that you need to work and get back to your DJ decks.
